Guidelines for those who received 2nd shot of Pfizer at least 6 months ago
Based on efficacy data provided by the makers of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration, approval has been granted for the administration of a Pfizer booster shot.
A “booster dose” is another dose of a vaccine that is given to someone who built enough protection after vaccination, but then that protection decreased over time (this is called waning immunity).
While the vaccine is the same, doctors do make a distinction between a booster shot and a third dose.
Doctors use the term third dose when referring to people with compromised immune systems who may not have gotten the level of protection they need from the first two doses. The third dose provides that level of immunity.
The Indiana Dept. of Health supports guidelines issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for people to get the booster shot who received the second doze of the Pfizer vaccine at least 6 months ago.
The CDC recommended the following eligible individuals:
People 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series
People age 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series
People aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks
People aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
