William Johnson's picks for Black History Month

At a film festival event that has become a tradition in Gary, Indiana, a series of independent Black films will screen during Black History Month on the weekend of Friday, February 17 through Saturday, February 18, 2023.

In its 12th year of presentations, the Festival continues to be hosted by Gary native, and Hollywood actor William L. Johnson. The 2-day cultural event will present a number of feature films and a series of shorter pieces including comedies, dramas based on crime, and romance and action thrillers, each with a specific Black theme.

The Festival begins Friday, February 17 in the morning with a Student Film Festival (closed event) and will include: Rules are Rules, Tender Curiosity, Fall for You, To Get By, The Bad Old Days, Keep it to Yourself, GunTooSoon, Poison, Breaking the Silence, Separated, and Rats in the House.

It will continue Friday, February 17 at 6:30 with a Reception followed by screenings at 7 p.m. and will include: A Bill Johnson trailer, Masterclass: The Patrice Gaines Story, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, The Secret Weapon: Yesterday is Today, Pretty Boy, Being X in America, Into the Park (feature) and Wounds. Advance admission is $20; the cost at the door is $25.

The Festival will conclude Saturday, February 18, 7 p.m. and will include: A Bill Johnson Trailer, The Struggle, Nana’s Porch, Weary Blues, Redemption and Bruised (feature). Advance admission is $15; the cost at the door is $20.

Tickets may be purchased at Beautiful Things, 4335 Broadway, Gary, daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Local underwriters are South Shore Arts, the Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, the Hard Rock Casino and NIPSCO. Co-sponsors include the African American Achievers Youth Corps., Inc., NAACP, local fraternities and sororities, and various community groups.
