Shots fired at Family Dollar injures employee

Gary Police Department Commander Dawn Westerfield reported Gary Police are investigating shots fired inside the Family Dollar in the 1400 Block of west 25th Avenue.

Police were dispatched to the store today, December 4, 2023.

Upon arrival, officers observed an employee with gunshot wounds. The victim, a 21-year-old black male from Gary, was working inside the location when the incident occurred.

The victim and suspect have prior knowledge of each other, and this incident is personal between the two and not a robbery of the store, Westerfield said. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

The suspect was not on scene when the officers arrived. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds by Gary Fire Department Medics.
