One auction of abandoned and unclaimed vehicles raised $85,000

When used car prices skyrocketed this year it was an exceptional year for the Gary Police Department's sale of unclaimed and abandoned vehicles, said Chief Brian Evans.

Evans appeared at the Gary city council's Finance Committee hearing Tuesday night requesting an interfund transfer. He wanted additional monies transferred to a fund to pay officers who worked the department's vehicle auctions. The fund was depleted, Evans said, and the police officers would be needed for the auction coming November 6.

The department collected $85,000 from the first auto action in March and $29,000 at a 2nd auction.

Councilwoman Tai Adkins and Councilman Clorius Lay told Chief Evans he needs to promote the auctions to the public.

Evans said auction notices will be sent to local media.

GPD does post auction details on its Facebook page and the November auction was widely shared among users -- 943 at the latest check.

The November 6th public auto auction will be held at 3 Gary tow yards. Anyone is eligible to attend and no special permits or licensing is required.

Viewing will begin at 8:30 am at Republic Frame and Axel, 7500 Melton Rd, Gary IN 46403. The auction will start at 9am for 47 vehicles.

Immediately following, the auction will move to S&S Towing, 3651 W. 4th Ave, Gary IN 46406. This auction is for 44 vehicles.

Following S&S, the auction will move to Bennie's Towing, 2160 W. 10th Ave, Gary IN 46404 with an auction of 40 vehicles.

Vehicle purchases are cash only unless prior arrangements have been made.

Opening bid for model year 2011 and newer is $500. Opening bid for model year 2010 and older is $350. There is a $50 minimum bid increment.

Winning bidder will pay the first $350 to the tow yard plus a $40 franchise fee. The remaining balance will be paid to the City of Gary.
