Police shoot man who was firing at individual on the ground

Gary Police Public Information Officer Lt. Dawn Westerfield reported a homicide with an officer involved shooting occurred Sunday, the morning of September 27.

Responding to a 2:30am call of shots fired in the 700 block of Broadway, officers encountered a crowd when they arrived. While dispersing the crowd at the location, outside of a night club, officers heard additional shots being fired.

Gary officers investigated the additional shots and observed a male firing at another male who was on the ground. Officers engaged the male shooter who then exchanged gun fire with officers.

The suspect was shot in the leg by an officer. He is in stable condition and under guard at a medical facility.

The male victim, age 28, was declared deceased on the scene by the Lake County Coroner's Office. The Metro Homicide Unit will be investigating the homicide and the Lake County Sheriff's Department will investigate the officer involved shooting.

The Gary Fraternal Order of Police also issued a statement on the shootings. Gregory Wolf, FOP Lodge 61 President added, “We are happy to report that no other citizens or police officers were injured during the incident. We are confident that the investigation will show that the officers and members of the Gary FOP performed in heroic fashion using their training and bravery to stop the threat of anyone else being injured or killed.”
