Lakeshore North Route R6 starts Monday, April 29

Beginning Monday, April 29th, Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) will start bus service connecting downtown Hammond and Whiting.

The new bus line –Lakeshore North Route R6 – will depart from State and Morton, in Hammond, on weekdays every “even hour.” Service will connect to the current South Shore rail station and the planned Central Station for the South Shore and Westlake commuter rail lines.

Riders can request stops at:
• Calumet College of St. Joseph
• Wolf Lake Memorial Park
• North Hammond Walmart
• Horseshoe Casino
• Downtown Whiting, and
• Whihala Beach

To accommodate this service area expansion, the Lakeshore South (R4) will operate from downtown Hammond every “odd” hour to maintain connection to the Lakeshore Connection (R1).

GPTC will closely monitor ridership and make any needed routing adjustments, said David Wright, GPTC Planning and Marketing Manager. High ridership on these routes will trigger increased frequency. This change will also expand GPTC’s Access219 paratransit service area.

Revised schedules can be found on www.garytransit.com. The Interactive System Map and trip-planning apps, such as Google Transit and Moovit, have also been updated. Printed schedules will also be available in the main office at the Metro Center.

For more information, call (219) 885-7555 extension 204 to reach Mr. Wright.
