Back-to-School Jamboree returns September 17 at IUN

3-on-3 hoops competition, school supplies, fun activities and more

State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) announces the return of his annual Back-to-School Jamboree.

The 20th annual Jamboree will be held Saturday, September 17 from 8:30am to 4pm at Indiana University Northwest in the Savannah Center, 3400 Broadway in Gary. Refreshments will be served.

“The Back-to-School Jamboree encompasses everything good about the Gary community,” Smith added. “The values that 3-on-3 basketball instills are unmatched: teamwork, integrity and work ethic. It’s a great way for kids to have fun and learn to work together. I’m looking forward to September 17th.”

“The Jamboree has always served as a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to get excited for the school year,” Smith said. “We are always grateful to have local organizations and businesses join us for a day full of fun, learning, and memory-making.”

The first 300 students who attend the Back-to-School Jamboree will receive free school supplies. Lil Lou's Barber Shop returns to give free hair cuts.

Along with the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, there will also be a variety of activities and competitions for all attendees, including double dutch jump rope and dance.

Trophies and other prizes will be presented to those participating in the competitions. Registration is $30 for all basketball teams. All team members will receive free shirts and lunch. Registration for other competitions is $1 per person. To register, call Smith at 219-887-2046. Registrations will also be taken at the event.

Vendor booths are also available. The cost is $35 and $45 if you are selling food.
