Indiana State Police reported a wrong way driver on the Indiana Toll Road led to a head-on crash with another vehicle, causing the deaths of 4 including the driver of the vehicle going the wrong way.

The accident happened just east of the Grant Street exit in Gary, early Saturday morning.

Killed in the two-vehicle crash were Tiara Davis, age 25 of Calumet City, IL, the driver of a 2017 Toyota SUV; Octavio Chavez-Renobato, age 45 of Chicago, driving a 2007 Jeep SUV, his wife Eva Gonzales, age 34, and son Luis, age 14. Three daughters of Chavez-Renobato – Emily, age 10, Damaris, age 11, and seven-month old Florali – survived the crash but sustained serious/critical injuries.

According to the state police, preliminary investigation by Trooper Alaa Hamed and an Indiana State Police reconstruction team revealed a 1:41 a.m. dispatch report of a wrong way driver going west bound in the east bound lanes of traffic from the 21 mile marker on the Indiana Toll Road. It was also reported that the vehicle was allegedly driving without head lights.

Shortly thereafter, there was report of a head-on crash near the 13.1 mile marker (just before the Grant Street exit on the toll road).

The Toyota SUV had crashed head on into the Jeep SUV that was traveling in the left lane. Davis, the lone occupant of the Toyota died at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep also died at the scene. Trooper Alaa Hamed and Good Samaritans tried life saving measures on the Jeep’s front seat passenger and the 14-year-old to no avail.

The three children were originally taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary where Emily was later air-lifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center and Damaris and Florali (who was in a child safety seat) were flown to Comers Children Hospital in Chicago.

State police said toxicology reports on the drivers are pending.

On September 1, another incident involving a wrong-way driver caused 4 deaths on the Indiana Toll Road.
