Every genre of gospel music, from traditional to new

“Looking at these names, I see every genre of gospel music,” said Ayanna Wright, host of WGVE Radio’s Gospel Express. “When shows are put together like this, it is going to be a good night of music.”

Wright knows many of them from local church choirs and singing groups, and she plays their music. “They aren’t women who just want to sing. Some come from families of gospel artists.”

The African American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc. will host their 10th Annual “Divas of Gospel” Concert on Saturday, June 9 at 7 p.m. in the Glen Theater, 20 West Ridge Road, in Gary.

Dr. Vernon G. Smith, AAAYC board chairman, said the event will feature some of the best female gospel singers in Gary. Among those scheduled are Gloria McCray, Sulretha Swain, Arelise Robinson, Lisa Powell, Gloria Morson, Denice Sandidge, Nicole S. Mabon-Brewer, Lorraine Jenkins-Cole, Rosalind Portis, Deborah Ross, Melva Castleberry, Carma Jones, Jannie Dates, Debra Moore, Maridythe Mack, LaVonne Jarrett, Cecelia "CeCe" Tapp, Sharla Johnson, Myesha Daniels, Pam Pruitt, Anita Gathing-Green, and Anjelah Evans.

“For our first Divas of Gospel, we had 10 artists. Now we’re up to 22,” said Smith about the success of the show. “This year, two of our divas are first ladies in their churches.”

Tickets for the event are $15 and may be purchased at Beautiful Things, 3570 Village Court. The cost at the door will be $20. For additional information contact Smith at 887-2046.
