Fire starts in apartment where three children were left unattended

A Gary woman now faces charges of neglect following the loss of 2 of her three children in a fire.

The fire happened Sunday, March 25 in the home of Kristen Alyse Gober, age 33, and a resident at the Lakeshore Dunes Apartments, 5820 Lake Street, Gary.

Gary Police Detective Corporal Edward Gonzalez secured charges Tuesday against Gober.

It was discovered that Gober left her three small children unattended in their apartment for an extended period of time. During the time the children were unattended, a fire started in the kitchen area of the apartment.

Gary Fireman pulled two-year-old Kailani Gober and 4-year-old Khristopher Gober from the 4th floor apartment. Both had suffered from smoke inhalation and minor burns, and were taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in critical condition. The two children died in the hospital.

Their six-year-old brother was able to escape the fire.

Neighbors saved an 8-year-old boy who was hanging out of the window from another apartment on the 4th floor. He was urged by people below to jump into the blanket they were holding. The child landed safely and was checked out by medics on the scene who said he was okay.

Gober was originally taken into custody for outstanding warrants.

Gober is charged with two counts of Neglect of a Dependent Causing Death, one count of Neglect of a Dependent and Possession of Marijuana. Gober remains in custody at this time.

Gary Fire Chief Paul Bradley said the property manager at Lakeshore Dunes is making arrangements to move all residents in the building to other units in the complex.

Lt. Dawn Westbrook, GPD public information officer asked, “Anyone with additional information on this incident is urged to contact the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit at 219-755-3855 or the Crime Tip Line at 866-CRIME-GP.”
