NWI Food Council conference puts a spotlight on increasing access to healthy foods
Wednesday, October 16, IU Northwest and the NWI Food Council are uniting forces to raise awareness of hunger, food security and poverty in recognition of World Food Day.
The IU Northwest World Food Day event will highlight intergenerational food security and raise awareness of the importance for nutritious food access across the lifespan, with a focus on Northwest Indiana communities.
All events will take place on October 16 in IU Northwest’s Library Conference Center, room 105.
10:45 a.m.: Showing of Food Frontiers documentary: The documentary showcases six projects from across the US that are increasing access to healthy food. Traveling across the country, the filmmakers documented diverse efforts to improve access—from a pioneering program in California that connects local produce to schoolchildren, a social enterprise grocery store run by students in Nebraska, and a Virginia pediatrician who supplements her practice with cooking classes.
11:40 a.m.: Lunch with ingredients sourced from Northwest Indiana farmers and producers through Region Roots, the NWI Food Council’s mission-driven local farm and food hub.
12:40 p.m.: Panel Discussion with local food access leaders: Victor Garcia (Executive Director of Food Bank of NWI), Nicholas Alessandri (ACF Certified Chef De Cuisine; Food Service Director of River Forest Community School Corporation), Jen Trowbridge (President/CEO of CoAction) and Jocelyn Chang-Stroman (IUN Community Garden Student Advisory Board Member; Medical Student, IU School of Medicine)
