Unsecured gun in home being investigated
Commander Sam Roberts of the Gary Police Department reported a 2 year-old has died from gunfire.
On Friday, November 17, at approximately 7:21pm, Gary Police were dispatched to Northlake Methodist Hospital for a 2 year-old gunshot victim.
When the officers arrived, they spoke with the child's mother. She told the officers that her son was accidentally shot by her 3-year-old son. The mother told the officers that the older child found the gun in her purse when she left a bedroom.
Additional officers were then dispatched to a home in the 2100 block of Georgia Street where the shooting is alleged to have occurred. Officers secured that home for the investigators.
“Sadly the 2 year-old died from his injury,” Roberts said. The Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force is investigating this shooting. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call (219) 755-3855.
The Gary Police Department asks that gun owners secure their weapons in a gun box or with a gun lock.
In an earlier report on Friday, Roberts said the Gary Police Department is investigating the stabbing of a 28 year-old Gary man in the 2100 block of Wright St. on Gary’s west side.
At approximately 11:07am, the victim told officers that two unknown males stopped him as he was walking in the area and asked to see his cell phone. The victim told the two that his phone did not work.
The victim told the police that the pair then asked him if he had anything in his pockets and after a brief conversation with one of them, he began to wrestle with him because he thought the person had a gun. As the two men were wrestling the victim states the other of the pair stabbed him in the side of his back.
The two men then ran off. The victim told the police he went to his girlfriend’s house and she drove him to the hospital.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call (219) 881-1210.
