Instigated by gambling loss and anger at girlfriend
Caprice Edward Cashaw, named as the suspect in the mass shooting in Whiting, surrendered without resistance to law enforcement officers.
Two died and 3 were wounded in the shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 30 at the Portside Pub, 1516 Indianapolis Blvd. The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Lorraine Reyna, age 59 and Paul Olivares, age 25.
Reyna was a patron and Olivares was the bartender.
Police Departments in Hammond and Whiting responded to calls of shots fired at the bar at 4am that morning. By 5pm Sunday afternoon, Hammond police announced Cashaw, age 31, of Merrillville, was in custody.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office on April 1st, Cashaw waived his Miranda rights when he was interviewed by Hammond police.
Cashaw told police he and his girlfriend Ciera Jamison had just left the Horseshoe Casino.
“Cashaw stated that he lost $7,000 that evening and was mad. An argument erupted between him and Jamison because he blamed her for the losses. He admitted to physically assaulting Jamison while driving, and pulling over coincidentally in front of the Portside Pub,” the affidavit stated.
“He had the firearm when he exited the car and walked to Jamison's side of the vehicle and continued to assault her,” the affidavit said. “He stated that after several minutes of assaulting her, he became calm and walked back to the driver's side. While doing this, he noticed people from the Portside Pub come outside and that Jamison started to run from the car.”
Cashaw said he began shooting his gun in her direction, admitting he was well aware of the additional bystanders nearby, and continued to shoot in her direction. Cashaw stated that he continued to fire until he reached the bar's entrance, knowing that the bullets were hitting the people outside. He saw Jamison open the door and followed her, shooting in her direction. He knew he hit her when she fell down inside the bar.
“Cashaw admitted he was intoxicated, but that he was fully aware of his actions when he shot everyone at the Portside Pub. When shown a still image of the shooting at Portside Pub, Cashaw positively identified himself in the image as the shooter,” the affidavit stated.
Jamison is being treated for 10 gunshot wounds. A patron was shot in the leg and was released from the hospital. A second patron who suffered 2 gunshot wounds is in stable but serious condition.
