Tornado damage assessment continues
Gary school officials don’t know when students will return to Frankie Woods McCullough Academy following the tornado that ripped the roof from a wing of the school on March 19.
The tornado hit 3 hours after the close of school that Wednesday, destroying the roof covering the gymnasium and some classrooms.
“Damage to the school is still being assessed and entrance to the building is prohibited until clearance is granted by safety officials,” said Chelsea Whittington, GCSC Chief of Public and Community Relations. “Currently, there are no updates regarding the restoration of damaged areas.”
With Spring Break ending for the district on Friday, March 28, GCSC Supt. Yvonne Stokes said all McCullough staff, teachers and students will report to the Gary Area Career Center, 1800 E. 35th Avenue on Monday, March 31 at their regularly scheduled times.
"Our first concern is the safety of all students, staff, families and stakeholders of the McCullough Academy family. We came together as a team to make the best decision on behalf of children, which is to remain at the Gary Area Career Center until further notice," said Supt. Stokes.
Parents who drive their scholars to school are asked to drop them off between 7:15am - 7:30am and pick them up at 2:30pm daily.
Students who walk to school should arrive at McCullough Academy daily, no later than 7:15am and gather on the sidewalk in front of the school. Buses will be on site to transport walkers to the Gary Area Career Center. A staff member will be on each bus to ensure proper supervision of all students.
The bus will transport walkers back to McCullough at the end of the school day with students arriving back at the school building between 2:45pm - 3:00pm.
Students who ride the bus will be picked up at their usual stops at regularly scheduled times and transported to the Gary Area Career Center. They will be transported back to their bus stops at the conclusion of the school day.
Parents can use the FirstView bus tracking mobile app at Garyschools.org/transportation to monitor the location and timing of their child’s bus.
