Caucus set for February 19; candidates have until February 16 to apply

Notices went out Tuesday to Democratic Party precinct captains in Gary’s 4th District to gather at 6pm, Wednesday, February 19th at the Calumet Township Multipurpose Center, 1900 W. 41st Ave. in Gary to fill the vacancy for their district on the Gary Common Council.

The 4th District councilperson was Tai Adkins.

Adkins resigned when she was selected in a Democratic Party Caucus on January 16th to fill the vacancy in the Office of Calumet Township Trustee. At that caucus, only Democratic Party precinct captains in Gary and unincorporated Calumet Township could cast votes.

That office became vacant when then Calumet Township Trustee Kim Robinson resigned on December 23, 2024. Robinson had been charged by federal authorities with wire fraud in connection to a misuse of township rental funds and was forced to resign.

Atty. Jim Wieser, the chairman of the Lake County Democratic Central Committee said candidates for the 4th District seat will have until 6pm Sunday, February 16 to file their application with the Committee.

Only residents of the 4th District are eligible to apply.

The evening is likely to be brief as there are only 9 precinct captains in the 4th District. At the January 16th caucus, there were 47 precinct captains and 7 candidates.
