Walls constructed in Home Depot's parking lot for home in Lake Station

Wednesday morning, the Home Depot parking lot in Hammond wasn’t just for customer’s cars.

The parking lot held stacks of lumber. Alongside was a crew of men and women wearing shirts stamped with “Building Homes for Veterans.”

The crew was Team Depot and they were constructing walls for Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana’s “Wall Panel Build” for a future homeowner.

“Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has been committed to helping veterans through Team Depot, a volunteer force of Home Depot associates. Each year, they dedicate thousands of hours to building and repairing homes for those who have served,” said Wende Burbridge, Habitat’s Director of Development.

The Home Depot Foundation has pledged $750 million in donations towards veterans missions like this, said Mike Hall, Habitat’s Volunteer & Donor Engagement Manager. “The Foundation paid for all the lumber for the wall build. They plan on doing some additional options with us, but this is one of the first ones that they've done with Habitat for Humanity in northwest Indiana.”

The construction crew started at 9:30 Wednesday morning and finished by 11:30 constructing exterior and interior walls for a 4-bedroom house in Lake Station. The home is for a family of 4. The mom is a U.S. Army veteran with 3 children; two are in college.

“We are deeply grateful to Home Depot and their associates for their support in this build,” said Dawn Michaels, Habitat’s executive director. “Their dedication to veterans mirrors our commitment to helping those who have served by providing them with the opportunity for homeownership. Together, we are building not just a home, but a future of stability for a veteran family.”
