Former President Donald Trump's attempted assassination at campaign rally shakes the nation

The attempted assassination of ex-president Donald Trump over the weekend had Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, looking at reactions from the public. The shooting was fake or arranged, Stewart said he found in online discussions.

Those same reactions floated here on the airwaves and at lunch conversations.

Monday morning, Natalie Ammons, the host of WLTH Radio’s morning talk show heard conspiracy theories from callers. The shooting was staged by Trump to gain support or sympathy, the station’s callers said.

Trump was grazed in the ear by a bullet from shots fired from a nearby roof during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Even though a man was killed and two others were wounded by the gunfire, WLTH callers still insisted it was fake or arranged by the ex-president.

“It was faked. Somebody knew it was going to happen. With all that security, how could a man get on top of a building with a rifle?” a caller said.

Callers pointed out that people attending the rally told security officials there was a man on a roof with a rifle.

The distance between Trump and the shooter is said to have been about 410 feet or about 130-plus yards. That’s about a third longer than the 100-yard dash, the shortest distance race in track and field events.

“Did you see Trump’s Nazi salute,” one caller said about Trump’s raised fist as he was rushed from the stage, surrounded by the U.S. Secret Service.

The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, died from the return fire of security detail stationed on the roof of another building. Crooks was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, a Pittsburgh suburb.

Corey Comperatore, 50, former fire chief of the Buffalo Township, PA Volunteer Fire Company died in the gunfire. His daughter, Allyson, wrote on social media that her father "shielded my body from the bullet that came at us."

David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, both of Pennsylvania, were seriously wounded and are now in stable condition.

Trump had just started speaking about 6:15pm when the gunshots rang out at his July 13th campaign rally in Butler, PA, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Some in the lunch hour crowd at the McDonald’s on 5th Avenue and Grant, in Gary, were just as skeptical, claiming the shooting was arranged.

“He belonged to a rifle club in high school. His classmates said he couldn’t even shoot straight,” one of the women said she had read online.

“He didn’t do it by himself. Someone else was involved,” her lunch companion added.

In a report from CBS news, a varsity rifle team member at Crooks’ high school said Crooks had tried out for the team freshman year but did not make the junior varsity roster and did not return to try out for the team in subsequent years.

Now, members of Congress have called on the Director of the U.S. Secret Service Kimberly Cheatle to testify about the incident at a July 22nd committee hearing.
