Spencer brings his love for film to a new audience

Lakeshore Public Television's 2022 season of Lakeshore Classic Movies Chicagoland has a new host, Mark Spencer, director of the Gary Community School Corporation's West Side Theater Guild.

Classic Movies Chicagoland airs Saturday nights at 10pm. The first show of the new season with Spencer aired January 1.

Lakeshore's member guide shows January will feature a month of classic westerns from the 1940s through the 1960s.

Spencer said there will be a variety of genres for each month. "As host, I do talk in detail about the directors and writers of the films being screened. I like the idea that classic films that may have been forgotten are given a new life for modern audiences."

James Muhammad, President and CEO of Lakeshore Public Media said, "So proud to have filmmaker, theatre producer/director, arts advocate Mark Spencer as the new host."

Over the years, Spencer has built the West Side Theater into the preeminent entertainment venue in Northwest Indiana. Under his direction the theater underwent a multi-million dollar renovation adding state-of-the-art lighting and sound, rigging, curtains, recording studios, and most recently a massive mural depicting diverse students practicing the arts. Mark has leveraged his vast knowledge and experience as a talent buyer, producer and promoter to bring an impressive array of concerts, theater, dance and performance art to the West Side stage.

In 2004, he put his love of films to good use by directing and producing his first feature, Posin’, which was screened before a live audience of 2,000 people and given glowing reviews by filmmaker, Spike Lee. Over the next four years, Spencer directed and produced The Gilded-Six-Bits, Fusion: A Documentary, The Ballad of Sadie Hawkins, The Firing Squad, Mug Shots, Prodigy, Swan Song, Goners, Comes to Shove, and Steel Waters. His most current film release is entitled, Help Wanted. It was produced in 2018.

Spencer created MAS Media 7, a film and video production company that has produced television commercials, promotional videos, and industrial films for government, universities, schools, social service agencies, and nonprofits.
