Parking fees increase at Lake Street, Marquette Park beaches

Effective date is July 1

Visitors to Gary's beaches at Lake Street and Marquette Park will see fee increases for vehicle parking and boat launchings, effective July 1.

The Gary City Council approved raising the fees at its June 1st meeting. The increases, requested by Park Board Commissioners in March, had stalled in city council committee hearings.

When the city received $177,000 from the sale of easements along portions of the Little Calumet River to the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission, the council balked at plans for spending the money.

The Prince administration planned to spend $90,000 to fill a budget hole in the Park Dept. and the rest of it on Marquette Park. Council members wanted the money shared with their district parks and asked for a citywide parks and recreation maintenance plan before they would approve the fee increases.

The fee hikes will pay for the rising costs of safety, garbage disposal, security and maintenance at Lake Street and Marquette Park beaches. Park Commissioners said the new fee structure is more in line with neighboring parks.

Parking costs differ for Gary residents and those outside of the city. Fees are for daily, weekend, and season passes.

At Lake Street and Marquette Park, Gary residents’ daily parking fee rose from $5 to $8. Parking fee for a Lake County resident rose from $5 to $10. For residents outside of Lake County, daily parking rose from $7 to $10.
