Gary Community Partnership community garden at 532 Johnson is pride of Earth Day

Area non-profits collaborate to make Gary's part of the Earth beautiful!
Gary – Gary Community Partnership (GCP) mobilized over 60 hands at their 532 Johnson Street community garden over the weekend for an annual spring collaboration event.
The effort, supported by Butterfly Dreamz, For the Love of the Arts, IronWorkz, and numerous community residents, also coincided with the non-profit’s fourth annual observance of Earth Day. The groups seeded 600 flowering plants in addition to cleaning eight flower beds, before planting 120 Dahlias.
Registered teen workers received a monetary stipend. The event, sponsored in part by McDonald's Lubeznik Family Restaurants, was held on Saturday, April 20th from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in their Gary, Indiana garden lot donated by Methodist Hospitals.
“The collaboration with other area non-profits was fueled by a mutual goal of having an impact on the communities where we live and serve,” said GCP Executive Director Jeffrey Edwards. The organization has cultivated the land into a viable floral and vegetable garden that provides jobs for teens, floral bouquets for area businesses and residents, fresh produce for the community, and summer activities for children under a beautiful gazebo.
In June, Gary Community Partnership will launch a youth lawn care service for residential and commercial customers. Major funding for the 2024 GCP programming is provided by BMO Harris Bank, the Legacy Foundation, and First Financial Bank, with support from Methodist Hospitals, Peoples Bank, Nipsco/NiSource Foundation, and the Urban League of Northwest Indiana.
