Mental health is not just a personal issue, but a public issue that requires attention from lawmakers

Jaci Dumas, an Andrean High School student representing the Indiana Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, spoke at the Indiana Statehouse about the importance of youth advocacy, particularly around mental health.

She emphasized that mental health is not just a personal issue, but a public issue that requires attention from lawmakers, educators, families, and communities. She called for an end to the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging open conversations and greater access to resources and support for students.

Jaci highlighted the power young people have to influence change by sharing their experiences, asking questions, and advocating for better mental health support in schools and communities. She reminded her peers that they are not just future leaders, but leaders today, capable of shaping policies and creating healthier environments.

Her message reinforced that investing in youth mental health strengthens families, schools, and the entire state, and she challenged students to use their voices with courage and purpose to help build a better future.
