Union members give nod to Melton after candidates debate

Gary’s Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed State Senator Eddie Melton over Mayor Jerome Prince, FOP President Delmar Stout announced in a statement Wednesday.

“On Friday, March 10, the Gary FOP #61 hosted a mayoral candidate forum with incumbent Mayor Jerome Prince and challenger Senator Eddie Melton. The Gary FOP represents nearly 250 active and retired police officers.

“The candidates were asked a series of questions related to public safety. The forum was well attended by both FOP members and the public. After the conclusion of the forum, a vote was taken regarding who the Gary FOP would endorse to be the next Mayor of Gary.

“The Gary FOP #61 overwhelmingly endorses Senator Eddie Melton as our choice to be the next Mayor of the City of Gary. Senator Melton has worked tirelessly to bring economic improvements to Northwest Indiana, including the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana.

“Senator Melton has provided a comprehensive, well thought out, and achievable plan, that addresses not only the concerns of law enforcement professionals, but public safety as a whole. Senator Melton recognizes prioritizing public safety as essential for Gary to flourish and prosper.

“Therefore, the Brothers & Sisters of the Gary FOP Ben K. Perry Lodge 61, formally endorse Senator Eddie Melton for the next Mayor of Gary.”

Mayor Prince and Melton are the only 2 mayoral candidates in the contest that will be decided in the May 2nd Democratic Primary elections.
