Annual health fair Saturday at Ivy Tech/Indiana University Northwest

Committed to the overall health of communities of color, the Northern Indiana Chapter of the Links, Inc. will once again celebrate Men’s Health and Wellness on Saturday, December 10th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Ivy Tech Community College, 3491 Broadway in Gary, located in the new classroom building of Indiana University Northwest.

This free event is open to the public and will feature health presentations focused on areas threatening the lives and wellbeing of African Americans men including chronic kidney disease, diabetes, prostate cancer and high cholesterol.

“We are excited about hosting this event because it will provide men with a better understanding of their health status, risk factors and how to stay active, be healthy and thrive,” said Northern Indiana Links Chapter President LaVada Taylor. "These services are definitely needed particularly since chronic kidney disease and prostate cancer are prevalent in Northwest Indiana."

Featured speakers include Dr. Sandra Gadson, Nephrologist; Dr. Andre Artis, Cardiologist; Dr. Adam Murphy, Urologist; Ray The Trainer, Fitness Guru and several others.

Male attendees will have access to free onsite health screenings via Community HealthNet Health Centers’ mobile unit and the Rev. Charles Williams Prostate Mobile Unit from the Indiana State Health Department. These screenings represent a convenient way for men to do a health check-in prior to their next annual physical.

Additionally, the Community HealthNet Mobile Unit will provide free screenings at two local group homes that provide resources to homeless men.

Members also participate in community outreach programs, including distributing Covid care kits at several schools. Since 2021, the Northern Indiana (IN) Chapter is a recipient of a grant from the Black K.A.R.E. (Kidney Awareness Resources and Education) Initiative to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease in black communities.
