The Lake County Sheriff's Office is considering multiple charges against Eric White, the driver involved in a fatal crash that took the lives of a woman and a small child today, on I/80-94.

Pam Jones, Public Information Officer for Sheriff Oscar Martinez, said Lake County traffic records show that back in November, White, age 21, had been arrested by Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers for resisting.

Jones reported that at approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday, officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop a driver who was traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarded a traffic signal near 25th Avenue and Broadway in Gary.

The driver refused to stop and accelerated, headed southbound on Broadway onto the Interstate. Jones said the driver continued traveling at high speeds which caused officers to lose sight of the vehicle. Eventually the driver swerved in and out of lanes of traffic on I-80/94 and struck the rear end of a semi near Colfax St.

Indiana State Police investigated the accident and reconstructed the scene.

ISP reported the driver of the vehicle being pursued, a 2010 Audi, lost control of the vehicle and rear ended a semi-trailer in the right lane. After striking the trailer, the Audi spun across all lanes and drove into the median wall. After hitting the wall, the Audi then continued back across the lanes in front of the same semi that it had rear-ended and was struck on the passenger side by the front of the semi.

The Audi came to a final rest wedged under the front bumper of the semi.

During the initial impact with the trailer, the adult female passenger, age 20, suffered fatal injuries and was ejected from the vehicle. A one-year-old child who was in a car seat on the rear passenger side of the Audi also suffered fatal injuries.

Both passengers were declared deceased at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. As a result of the extensive crime scene, all lanes were blocked for the investigation.

Jones said White suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital. He is currently being held at the Lake County Jail pending charges.
