WSTG's Mark Spencer reunites cast members for a panel discussion and staging of "Fences"
August Wilson’s plays have had many openings at the West Side Theatre Guild and on February 15, WSTG director Mark Spencer reunites cast members from those productions for a celebration of the playwright at Indiana University Northwest.
Spencer, adjunct professor of the arts at IUN and cast members will hold a panel discussion on Wilson, followed by a presentation of “Fences.”
“Fences” is a 1985 play by Wilson. Set in the 1950s, it is the sixth in Wilson's ten-part "Pittsburgh Cycle". Like all of the "Pittsburgh" plays, “Fences” explores the evolving African American experience and examines race relations, among other themes.
The play won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play. The play was first developed at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's 1983 National Playwrights Conference and premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1985.
