Volunteers help get the job done

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson was at the head of the line for Gary’s Thanksgiving Food Giveaway Monday night, greeting everyone with a ‘Happy Thanksgiving.’

Down the line, a turkey and a big bag of fixings for side dishes awaited.

Gary’s Office of Constituent Services had 500 turkeys and bags for residents who had signed up for the giveaway. Director LaShawn Brooks praised the unsung heroes of the evening – the volunteers who sorted the foods and packed the bags. “We had the Masons, Eastern Star, Steel City Academy, AmeriCorps Vista Volunteers, Jack & Jill, city employees, residents, and block clubs.”

At the end of the line were members from the West Side basketball team who helped the elderly and moms with kids get the heavy bags to their cars.

This year’s food giveaway was the kick off for the city’s 2020 Census countdown. Mayor Freeman-Wilson said she believed the city was undercounted in the 2010 census. “Now that the next census can be completed online, we have to get the word out to as many as we can to get counted.”
