Open House is Friday, October 4; program starts October 7

The Gary Youth Services Bureau, a division of Gary Parks and Recreation, is gearing up for the start of the city’s 2019-2020 After School Program, available free to residents at three different locations. This year’s program will also offer different activities for students at each location.

Beginning Monday, October 7, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m., students may spend after school time at the Paul Douglas Center for Environmental Education, 100 N. Lake Street. The site is named “Nature Kids” where children will enjoy birding, hiking and other activities at the Indiana Dunes National Park.

The Christ United Methodist Church, 201 W. Ridge Road will host “Expressions” where students will sing, dance and participate in musical theatre and the recreational component;

“All Ball” will be hosted at the Hudson-Campbell Sports and Fitness Center, 455 Massachusetts Street. “All Ball” is designed for teens and will expose youth to a variety of careers in the sports industry.

Additionally, each site will offer homework assistance, free meals and snacks to participants of the program.

Gary residents are encouraged to take advantage of these after school opportunities. To learn more, all are invited to visit either of the sites for a meet and greet and tour during an Open House/Registration on Friday, October 4th at 5 p.m.

The city’s after school program is supported by Cities Connecting Children to Nature and the National League of Cities (NLC).
