No injuries to drivers, one auto receives extensive damage

Charges of criminal mischief have been lodged against 2 juveniles for throwing rocks from a Gary overpass onto I-80/94.

Indiana State Police reported multiple calls, starting at approximately 1:15 p.m August 1., were received at the ISP Regional Dispatch Center in Lowell of rocks being thrown from the Harrison Street overpass in Gary.

ISP Master Trooper Dwayne Halliburton was dispatched to the scene to take a criminal incident report from a victim. Multiple vehicles were struck by the rocks, with one receiving extensive damage.

Gary Police also responded to the scene and the last known location of the suspects, locating two juveniles that matched the description of the rock throwers. Subsequent investigation by M/Trp. Haliburton and the Gary Police Department resulted in the juveniles transportation to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center in Crown Point.

“Thankfully, nobody was injured as a result of this extremely negligent act,” said ISP Public Information Officer, M/Trp Glen Fifield. “This specific behavior has in the past resulted in serious injuries to include death to innocent motorists.”

The names, ages, sex and race of each of the juveniles will not be released. It is believed that only one vehicle sustained extensive damage as shown in the attached photo.
