The City of Gary’s Department of Commerce Community Development Division announces eight houses are for sale in the city, and available for purchase through the city’s Dollar Home Program.

Gary has been aggressively working to eliminate blight in the city through its blight elimination initiatives, said housing coordinator Lakia Manley. Demolition of abandoned structures and cleanup projects such as the 5x5x5’s, Blight Buster Days, and Operation High Impact are among the city’s ongoing efforts. “The city’s Dollar Home Program is yet another integral part of the city’s bold initiative to eliminate blight in Gary neighborhoods. The Dollar Home Program further encourages home ownership while eliminating blighted properties through the rehab of vacant houses in the city.”

Those interested in applying for the Dollar Home Program must have a minimum annual income of $38,750. Also, applicants must agree to rehab the house within one year and must occupy the home for five years. A non-refundable $25.00 application fee is required when applying. All houses will be sold for $1.00.

For more information and to apply for a home through the program, contact Lakia Manley, Gary Community Development Housing Coordinator via lmanley@ci.gary.in.us or at 219-881-5075. Applications will be accepted through October 1, 2018.
