Detectives investigating financial motive

The Hammond Police Department’s investigation of a homicide Monday morning has led to the discovery of the suspect’s body in his vehicle.

According to Lt. Steve Kellogg, Hammond Police public information officer, on December 11th at approximately 9:02 AM, Hammond police responded to an address in the 7000 block of Birch Avenue in reference to a welfare check.

Police officers discovered a white male, deceased in the front room of the residence. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head. He was identified as 57-year-old John Horvat of Hammond.

During the initial investigation, Hammond police detectives developed a primary suspect as 56-year-old Bruce Craft of Hammond. Police entered Mr. Craft’s known vehicle information into Hammond’s Blue Net license plate reader system and immediately received the last known location of the vehicle.

Later that day officers checked the area, a parking lot in the 7900 block of Indianapolis Blvd. and located a vehicle they believed matched that description.

Officers found a white male in the front seat who had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The man was identified as Bruce Craft.

Detectives are investigating a financial motive for the crime, Lt. Kellogg said. “However, the investigation is on-going and awaiting evidence examination. If anyone has additional information on this crime, they may contact Detective Sergeant Dan Bates at (219) 852-2979.”
