Athletics play a role in higher education and our democratic society

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) invites the community to a presentation by Fisk University President Kevin Rome at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 14 in the Student Union & Library on the Hammond Campus, 2233 173rd Street.

In his talk, Rome will address the roles of citizens in relation to sports and politics, and how athletics plays a role in higher education and our democratic society as a whole.

Lee Artz, professor of communication, assisted in coordinating Rome’s appearance at the university. “It’s important to explore social justice issues and participate in a culture that allows for democratic change,” said Artz.

“This is a timely discussion as this topic has received national media attention in recent months,” said Rick Costello, director of athletics. “On behalf of the PNW Pride student-athletes, coaches and staff, we are looking forward to Dr. Rome’s presentation.”

In addition to his leadership of Fisk University (Nashville, Tenn.), Rome is active in a host of civic and social organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Morehouse College (Atlanta, Ga.), a Master of Education in College Student Personnel from the University of Georgia, (Athens, Ga.) and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Texas at Austin (Austin, Texas).

The event, sponsored by the Office of Chancellor Thomas L. Keon, is open to the public and free of charge.
