Four identified, 3 in custody

All four suspects in the robberies and carjackings that occurred on July 18 have been identified and three of these four suspects are in custody. The Hammond Police Department would like to offer our thanks. Hammond Police Chief John Doughty said, “I would personally like to thank the businesses and community at large for their cooperation and information that directly led to the identification of these four violent subjects.”

On July 18, four young black males robbed two men in their 60’s and stole their vehicles, phones, and wallets. They were also involved in the robbery of a female at an ATM in Calumet City, IL. Within hours of releasing the video and photographs of these crimes, community members began calling in with information. “It is because of these calls from the community that we were able to so quickly identify these young men,” said Detective Sgt. John Suarez and Detective Lt. Mike Jorden. Hammond Police detectives worked with detectives from Calumet City Police and now three of the four are in custody.

“All four of these young men are from Chicago. This is another example of the imported crime affecting our local communities. However, working in cooperation with the outstanding neighboring Illinois police agencies allowed us to capture these subjects so quickly,” said Hammond Police Chief John Doughty.

Keyshawn Lofton, age 16 and Ryan Payne, age 23, were charged Friday with two counts of Armed Robbery, one count of Robbery causing injury, and two counts of Auto theft. A third suspect, age 15, has been arrested and is pending charges due to his age. The last suspect has been identified but is still at large. We ask if anyone can identify his whereabouts, to please call (219) 852-2981 with this information.
