Includes removal of unused railway trestle at 10th and Broadway

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is alerting drivers to periodic lane closures on State Road 53/Broadway, between 4th Avenue in Gary and U.S. 231 in Crown Point. INDOT road work will also be done on U.S. 30, between U.S. 41/Indianapolis Blvd. and State Road 55/Taft Street.

Work starts Monday, June 26 and is expected to last through the end of November. Crews will periodically close lanes to patch sections of the road, mill and resurface as part of a rehabilitation project.

In downtown Gary, INDOT will remove the elevated railway trestle between 10th Avenue and the SaveMore Plaza. The Indiana Harbor Belt RR trestle has been unused for decades. Heavy rains often cause high-water levels that lead to traffic disruptions beneath the track.

During this project, both State Road 53/Broadway and U.S. 30 will remain open to all through traffic, but will have lane restrictions in the construction areas. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to the signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Drivers can monitor road closures and traffic alerts at any time via the INDOT Northwest District social media channels: www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. Or visit http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
