Board is lead agency in school district takeover legislation
Indpls. – On Wednesday, State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Merrillville) was appointed as a member of the Distressed Unit Appeals Board (DUAB), announced Senate Minority Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson).
Through Senate Enrolled Act 567, co-authored by Sen. Melton, three additional advisory, non-voting positions were added to the DUAB. One appointed by the President Pro Temp, one by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the final by the Senate Minority Leader. Melton’s bill laid the framework for the state management of a school district that is in financial distress.
“Sen. Melton was the best person for this appointment,” Sen. Lanane said. “Through all of the hard work he has done to assist the financial crisis of the Gary Community School Corporation, his knowledge will be essential to the board’s purpose of providing relief for distressed political subdivisions and school corporations across Indiana.”
Sen. Melton will serve a one-year term on the DUAB.
“I appreciate this opportunity and am looking forward to playing a role on the Distressed Unit Appeals Board,” Sen. Melton said. “I hope that through this appointment I am able to assist communities and schools that experience financial hardships get on a sustainable fiscal track.”
