Nine teams head to Indiana FIRST Lego League championship

Thirty-two teams vied at IU Northwest Qualifying Tournament

The 10th annual IU Northwest Indiana FIRST Lego League Indiana Qualifying Tournament was held Sunday November 20, 2016 in the Savannah Gym.

Thirty-two teams from northern Indiana competed for 9 spots in the Championship Tournament on December 10th, 2016, said Lin Wozniewski, IUN professor in chemistry and physics and the tournament director.

There were 11 teams from Hammond, 4 teams from Whiting, 3 teams from Carmel and Michigan City, 2 teams each from Hobart, and Highland, and one each from Griffith, Girl Scouts, Munster, Walkerton, West Lafayette, Monticello, and Gary.

In addition, a Jr. FIRST Lego League Showcase was also featured. Jr. FLL is for children 6-9. Students in both categories researched methods of recycling trash for this year’s theme. The teams had 8 weeks to learn about Animal Allies and learn to work as a team. Students in the Qualifying Tournament also had to learn to program a robot made from Legos to run missions and earn points.

The nine teams qualifying for the Indiana Championship Tournament in Ft. Wayne are:
Pantherbotz – Griffith, Griffith Middle School;
Sisterhood of the Traveling Robot – Girls Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana;
Clark Pioneer Robotics – Whiting, George Rogers Clark Middle School;
Robotrix – Highland, Warren Elementary;
Battle Bats – Carmel, Creekside Middle School;
River Forest MS Robots – Hobart, River Forest Middle School;
T3M – West Lafayette;
Scott Bots – Hammond, Scott Middle School; and
Titanium Turtles – Carmel, Creekside Middle School.
