IU Northwest hosts free workshop for FIRST Lego League coaches Sept. 23

10th annual tournament set for Nov. 20
Indiana University Northwest will host a free workshop for individuals interested in coaching a FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Team. The workshop is set for 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23 in the Moraine Student Center.
FIRST® LEGO® League is an international competition in which teams of elementary and middle school students work as a team to program a NXT Lego robot. The two-part challenge is based on a real-world topic. Teams of up to 10 children, with one adult coach, participate in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field and developing a solution to a problem they have identified.
At the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn background about FIRST programs; key components of the FLL competition project; what to expect at a tournament; team best practices; and the Robot Game, including basics of the missions, hints in robot building and the basics in programming the robot.
The workshop is facilitated by IU Northwest Lecturer and Regional Qualifying Tournament Co-Director Lin Wozniewski; Joe Markovich, Munster’s award-winning coach; and Ray Liskey, Hammond’s award-winning coach.
Coaches will gain practice programming the robots and learn coaching skills, including how to help the students work together as a team, and how to teach kids about winning and losing graciously.
Attendees should bring a laptop computer with NXT or EV 3 software loaded.
A FIRST® LEGO® League qualifying tournament will take place at IU Northwest from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20 in the Savannah Center at IU Northwest. The Indiana Championship Tournament takes place December 10 at Indiana University – Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW).
