Showcase for students in northwest Indiana high schools and career and technical programs

Sixteen trades have confirmed their participation in the 7th Annual Construction & Skilled Trades Day hosted by Center of Workforce Innovations and the Construction Advancement Foundation scheduled for November 14, 2023, at Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, Ind.

Skilled Trades Day will be held in the Industrial Building, from 8am to 2pm.

Each trade organization will showcase equipment, technology, and mock worksites for more than 1,000 students from 25 Northwest Indiana high schools and career and technical programs. Young people will be encouraged to participate in hands-on activities with opportunities to build and create.

The purpose of the annual event is to introduce young people to career opportunities and benefits related to building trades. The event also acquaints students with work skills in registered apprenticeship programs and ways to apply for those programs.

There are over 20 different skilled trade schools in the Northwest Indiana construction industry. Nine skilled trades allow participants to earn an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech Community College upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program.

The duration of each apprenticeship program varies by trade (typically 3-5 years).

Each apprenticeship program is operated independently of one another and all of them have different application and hiring procedures.

Participation in a high school building trades program can increase chances of getting accepted directly into an apprenticeship program.

Gaining acceptance into an apprenticeship program can be very competitive because there are usually more applicants than number of openings.

The cost to attend apprenticeship training school is free for the individual. However, the training costs are jointly funded and managed through labor and contractor employers.
