Gary PD, new homicide task force score early wins

Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter and Gary Police Department Interim Chief Jerry Williams praised the recently formed Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force for the arrest of an Indianapolis man who was convicted, in absentia, of murder and was a fugitive from justice.

The Task Force announced this week the arrest of Jimmie Caldwell, who last year was convicted and sentenced to 58 years for the 2015 murder of Donald Fuzzell in Gary. GPD detectives, Indiana State Police and the Indiana Excise Police make up the task force, which was officially launched earlier this month.

Mayor Prince praised the Homicide Team and law enforcement leaders for their determination in apprehending Caldwell and making Gary safer.

“Our Gary police department has always worked well with other law enforcement agencies, but this Homicide Task Force takes public safety to a new level, especially when we team up with Prosecutor Carter and our state law enforcement partners,” Mayor Prince said.

“Task Force detectives worked together with the Indiana State Police and the Indiana Excise Police to locate and bring Caldwell into custody,” Prosecutor Carter said. “As a result of the dedicated efforts of the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, Caldwell now will begin to serve his 58-year sentence.”

Chief Williams said Caldwell’s apprehension was the second time this month the Task Force has apprehended an at-large murder defendant, proving the Task Force is doing exceptional work.

“On April 19th, the same Task Force detectives were able to take into custody George James, who was wanted on murder charges for the October 2022 murder of Arlandus Jackson,” Chief Williams said. “The Gary Police Department and our partners remain fully committed to bringing all fugitives from justice into custody and ensuring the safety of our community.”
