Learn about Mobile Crisis Response at community meeting

The Interfaith Action Network invites the public to a community meeting on Sunday, May 22, from 3 - 4:15pm titled “Help, Not Handcuffs! Treatment, not Trauma! – The Promise of Mobile Crisis Response.”

The meeting will be held in Lessard Hall at St. Mary of the Lake, 6060 Miller Avenue in the Miller Beach neighborhood of Gary. The meeting will include a presentation on the need to expand access to mental health and substance abuse services, examples of successful programs of mobile response in other cities, and voices from the community.

Mobile mental health units were part of the Gary Police Reform Commission’s recommendations.

Public officials – including Mayor Prince, city council members, the county prosecutor and sheriff, Gary state legislators, and mental health professionals – have been invited to share what they are doing to bring mobile crisis units to Gary and the region.

The Interfaith Action Network is Bethel Lutheran Church, Temple Israel Social Action, Marquette Park United Methodist Church, St. Mary of the Lake Social Justice Committee, Trinity United Church of Christ, First Unitarian Church of Hobart, Christ Lutheran Church & Trinity Lutheran Church.
