Lake County Sheriff K-9 unit locates 1 suspect, second suspect still at large

One suspect is in custody following the killing of a bank security guard Friday afternoon, during an attempted robbery of Midwest Bank at the corner of Ridge Road and Cleveland Street in Calumet Township.

The Lake County Coroner identified the bank security guard as Richard Castellana, 55, of Tinley Park, IL.

Pam Jones, the Police Liaison for the Lake County Sheriff's Department said 2 males armed with a handgun and a rifle ambushed the security guard outside of the bank. The officer was shot and killed.

A surveillance camera captured images of one male with the weapons on the bank's property at 1975 W. Ridge Road. After shooting the guard, Jones said, "it's believed the suspents then entered the bank and demanded money."

Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officers were dispatched to the area and secured the scene. They also used K-9 units to track the last known locations of the suspects, according to witness statements.

A Lake County Sheriff K-9 unit located one of the suspects in a wooded area nearby; the second man remains at large.

No charges have been filed.
