City administration encouraging residents to apply for local Census jobs
The City of Gary, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and the Gary Common Council will present the city’s Thanksgiving Celebration and Food Giveaway on Monday, November 25, 2019 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center. This year’s event will also be a kick off for the city’s 2020 Census countdown.
In June this year, the city established a Gary Complete Count Committee (GCCC) to create awareness in the community, to share with residents the importance of the census and an accurate census count, and how the count affects the federal dollars that come to the community. The city and the GCCC will announce the Gary Census Poster Contest during the Thanksgiving event.
“The Census is important to our representation,” said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. “We believe we were undercounted in 2010 and we want to be sure every resident of Gary is counted in the upcoming census.”
On November 6th the city hosted a Census Job Fair at the new Goodwill Career Center on Ridge Road to encourage Gary residents to apply for local Census Jobs. Freeman-Wilson stated, “We encourage our residents to apply for census jobs. Residents can earn income while helping the city reach an accurate census count.” Census representatives were on hand to assist with the online application process and to answer questions. Representatives will also join the city and the GCCC at the kick off.
The city presents the Thanksgiving Giveaway and Celebration each year to provide Gary families who apply a wholesome meal on the Thanksgiving Holiday. Gary residents slated to receive baskets on November 25th completed applications during the registration period, Tuesday, October 22 - Wednesday, November 6, 2019. The Food Baskets at the celebration will be distributed to those who applied during the registration period.
Those desiring to volunteer with basket distribution may call the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services, 219-881-4815. Also, turkey and or monetary donations are still being accepted.
