Two males are from Griffith

An early Friday morning shooting in Gary has left the driver of a vehicle deceased and his passenger in serious but stable condition. Both men had been shot near 15th Avenue and Broadway.

Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady reported the Gary Police Dept. responded to a call for service that referenced shots fired and a possible gunshot wound victim on June 21, 2019 at approximately 2:53 a.m.

When officers initially arrived on scene they located a vehicle parked with the driver’s door open. The driver of the vehicle was lying on the ground near the vehicle and had suffered from an apparent gunshot wound. The officers also located the second gunshot victim seated in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The Gary Fire Department arrived on scene and transported the two male victims to Methodist Northlake for medical treatment. While at the hospital, the male driver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The male passenger was later transported to University of Chicago for treatment and is in stable condition at this time.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Coty Porter, age 40, of Griffith. The passenger, though not named, was reported to be a 37-year-old male from Griffith, Indiana as well.

At this time investigators believe a light colored, possibly a silver Chevy 4-door vehicle with a male black driver was involved.

Comm. Hamady stated, “Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact Detective Corporal Edward Gonzales of the Lake/Gary Metro Homicide Unit at (219) 755-3852 or 866-CRIME-GP.”

Gary Police Department was assisted by the Gary Fire Department, Lake County Coroner's Office, and the Lake County Police Crime Lab.
