Ceremonial flag raising to celebrate military service, bolstered commitment to student veterans

Indiana University Northwest announces the opening of a Veterans Resource Center in Hawthorn Hall, Room 106. The campus will officially dedicate the space the Monday following Veterans Day, at noon on November 12.

IU Northwest currently serves more than 100 students, faculty, and staff who are veterans or family members receiving veteran education benefits, according to Registrar Peter Zachocki.

“Veterans often face unique challenges as they pursue higher education following their service. It is our responsibility to do everything possible to ensure their success, all the way from getting enrolled to graduating,” Zachocki said. “Dedicating this space where veterans can explore tools to succeed and meet other student veterans is one way IU Northwest is both honoring their service and helping them achieve their goals.”

At the Veterans Day event, cadets representing IU Northwest’s Army ROTC program will begin the program at noon with an outdoor color guard ceremony and flag raising on the east side of Hawthorn Hall on Broadway Avenue.

Then, in room 106, Chancellor William J. Lowe will speak on the university’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families and officials will formally dedicate the Veterans Resource Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Attendees will also learn more about a new student veteran organization, the Military Service Association, from its founder, student Dan Riordan.

The Veterans Day observance will also see an appearance from Operation Combat Bike Saver, an organization that provides a workshop for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress. Founded by Cedar Lake native Jason Zaideman, the organization provides instruction and assistance to veterans in motorcycle restoration.

Resource tables with information from the Indiana National Guard, Student Counseling Services, and other veteran resources will be available.
