Man dies after altercation with police officer
A Gary man is dead following an early morning altercation with a Gary Police Officer.
Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady said police officers responded to a call for service at 5:58 a.m., Wednesday, September 12, regarding a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of an abandoned residence.
Officers arrived in the 600 block of New Jersey Street, in the Aetna section of Gary and located the vehicle in the driveway. According to Cmdr. Hamady, when the officers approached the vehicle, a male subject inside the vehicle discharged a weapon at the officers.
A Gary Police Officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding the male subject who was inside the vehicle.
Gary Fire Department responded to the scene where the male subject was pronounced deceased on scene.
The Lake County Coroner’s office identified the deceased as Thomas Watkins, age 38. His address is listed as the 4400 Block of 13th Pl, Gary.
The incident is being investigated by Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Gary Police have not released the name of the officer.
