I.U. DONS celebrate scholars and educators at 47th Education Banquet
Yvonne Lucas is Educator of the Year
The I.U. DONS, Inc. honored scholars and community supporters at their 47th anniversary Education Banquet on Saturday, October 28 in the Genesis Convention Center.
Rep. Vernon G. Smith, President of the organization of Indiana University alumni and undergraduates, stated that $3,000 in scholarships was presented in memory of the late George R. Coker. Coker was executive director of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana when he died in 1971. The winners were Taland Fields, Victoria Bacon, Devon Miller, Raelynn Kuydendall, Jewel Perry, and Mutia Morris.
Smith said a distinctive feature of the evening was the keynote address delivered by the winner of the DONS' 2017 Oratorical Contest, Corrion Davis, a senior at Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts Academy. The second place speech contest winner was Aaliyah Adams of Wirt-Emerson. The Speech Contest winners received cash awards of $200, $100 and $50.
Yvonne Lucas, a teacher at McCullough Girls Academy was awarded the DONS’ Educator of the Year Award. Robert Surney was the recipient of the Patricia Tillotson Meritorious Service Award.
