Munster man charged in East Chicago post office blast

Authorities say suspect has admitted to charges

The U.S. district attorney in Hammond, Thomas Kirsch, announced criminal charges against Eric Krieg for the September 6 explosion of a package in the East Chicago post office, 901 E. Chicago Drive. The package exploded injuring a postal mail handler.

Krieg was in custody Thursday, October 12 and according to the indictment, admitted he delivered a package containing the pipe bomb to the postal facility. The package was intended for a Munster resident.

Krieg, age 45 of Munster, is charged with knowing possession of a destructive device and transporting explosive materials.

Photos from post office security cameras were released of the suspect soon after the explosion.

Krieg also admitted to sending a threatening letter on September 29 to a Hammond resident. That letter included a note with a bullet inside. The note read, “The next one will be in the back of your head.”

In the indictment, federal investigators listed accounts from postal workers and customers, and social media blogs as evidence leading to Krieg’s arrests.

According to the NWI Times, Krieg was arrested at BP, where he works as an engineer.

Krieg will have his first court appearance on October 17.
