$3.5 million in construction projects coming to Jeorse Park and Marina
Groundbreaking for construction of the new Harborwalk at the East Chicago Marina, Monday, June 26 is another recreation enhancement coming to Jeorse Park. The park reopened in June 2016, following a 2-year closure as the city redeveloped the breakwalls protecting the park’s beach area and the AmeriStar Casino next door from Lake Michigan’s waves.
The park reopened with a new splash pad, renovations to the concession stand, and additional parking.
“We have been working hard to beautify our Lakefront and this year we have stayed on course with construction. It is one thing to see the blueprints on paper, but it is truly humbling to see them in reality, and within a few months we will all experience a beautiful new Harborwalk to enjoy for generations to come,” said Mayor Anthony Copeland.
The $3.5 million Harborwalk project will consist of removing and disposal of existing concrete pavement, landscape, lighting and other site elements; installing vehicular asphalt paving; installing concrete footings, paving, ramps, and planters.
Other enhancements include multiple types of lighting and a handrail with lighting; installing benches, shade structures, trash receptacles and other site furniture. A floating fountain will be added, utilities will be relocated and adjusted, and more landscaping.
Funding for this project was provided through the Regional Development Authority (RDA).
The project will be completed in two phases with an anticipated completion date around Labor Day.
