A space to display food, culture, and art while encouraging small business creation

The chefs who came together for "Meet the Chefs Brunch & Social" on Sunday, March 8 at Gary's ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen will do it again on Easter Sunday.

More than just chefs, Tim Bellamy, Tasha Tenae, and Niki Clemons are professionals whose business is catering. And where else in Gary could a collaboration of caterers have a showcase but at the ArtHouse.

Re-imagined from the former Dusties' Restaurant, it is now a space to display food, culture and art while encouraging small business creation. Its commercial kitchen is available for rent to retail food producers. The ArtHouse is also the site for the Gary Micro-Loan Program.

Chef Tasha, owner of Innovative Catering & Sweets, sharpened her business and culinary skills at the ArtHouse Culinary Business Incubator program in 2017. “Before CBI, I was overextending myself, trying to accommodate everyone for everything. But I learned my lane and what I needed to allow others to do."

The program taught the chef how to focus and sustain her business."You can’t be successful trying to be in the front of the house, back of the house, chef and everything else," she said.

Tim Bellamy, owner of Your Way Catering, is the former executive chef for Coco Taylor’s Restaurant at Majestic Casinos; former executive chef for the television show "Sunday’s Best," and former executive chef Methodist Hospitals.

Junior Cooks is Chef Tasha's next project for students, ages 13-17. The teens will learn techniques and lessons as if they were chefs in a restaurant. Junior Cooks starts Friday, March 27 at ArtHouse, from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Enjoying dessert and sipping on a complimentary mimosa, Alfreda Petersen described the food and service as excellent. "I will be back next month."

LaShawn Brooks is the new ArtHouse director. Brooks said, "Meet the Chef brunches will be held monthly on the 2nd Sunday. I want to see this space filled like it is today with community residents, neighbors and families having dinner, along with local entertainment, and all under one roof."

Sunday's entertainment was William McGee's "Just Us" Band.

Call the ArtHouse (219) 979-8156 for rental and program information.
