Roosevelt students will return to Gary Career Center

Students are settled for next year, but will building survive
Roosevelt students and their families learned Monday what many had suspected. When school starts in August, students will return to the Gary Career Center instead of their school at 25th & Harrison.
The news came in a letter from Marshall Emerson, superintendent of EdisonLearning’s schools in northern Illinois and Indiana. “Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy will open the new school year and conduct classes again at the Gary Career Center.”
Emerson explained that the repairs to the heating system were extensive, requiring the Gary Community School Corporation to extend the timeline for the work’s completion.
The Career Center has been home to Roosevelt students since February. Sub-zero temperatures from January’s polar vortex caused pipes to burst and the failure of the school’s heating system.
“It is our hope that we will be able to return to the Roosevelt building at some time in the near future,” Emerson wrote, “Over the summer, EdisonLearning and GCSC will continue to work collaboratively to address and rectify the maintenance and repair issues at the building, and will continue to work together to determine the best, safest, and most appropriate facility for the students in the future.”
Now that the immediate future of the students has been determined, the building’s safety is next to be settled. A call to GCSC Emergency Manager Peter Morikis asking will the school be boarded up to thwart vandals was not returned.
According to one report, the school has been broken into.
Already the lawns are over a foot high, giving the school an abandoned look.
Alumni have scheduled a grounds cleanup for 7 a.m. Saturday, June 8. Arica Buchanan asks volunteers to bring gloves, water, push brooms, garbage bags, rakes, and lawn tools. For more information, call (219) 200-4024.
