Call for proposals; Eric Deggans is keynote speaker

“Exploring Partnerships for the Future,” the March 29th conference at IU Northwest is part of the observance of IU’s bicentennial – a multi-year, multi-campus program, which includes a series of signature projects intended to reflect on IU’s past and look to the future as IU marks 200 years in 2020.

“Exploring Partnerships for the Future” will examine the region’s most pressing educational access and achievement concerns, while also celebrating the contributions IU Northwest has brought to its surrounding communities.

Conference organizers are seeking session presentations for the daylong event, with the intention of identifying and discussing ways to partner on improving educational outcomes and, thus, the quality of life for the citizens in Northwest Indiana.

“From after-school enrichment activities to early education initiatives and innovative career and college preparatory programs, we know that there are incredible organizations and individuals working hard to improve educational outcomes in Northwest Indiana,” said James Wallace, director of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs. “We invite as many local participants as possible to share what they are doing with a statewide audience committed to improving lives through education.”

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Educational best practices, developing effective partnerships, exploration of available resources, and improving the education pipeline.

Students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and service providers from any university, school or entity in Northwest Indiana with an effective program, partnership, or intervention may submit a proposal by December 21. Proposal guidelines, as well as the registration form to attend the conference, are available at iun.edu/diversity/new-events.

The conference highlight will be a luncheon keynote address by Eric Deggans, a Gary native and IU alumnus, who is a veteran journalist, National Public Radio television critic, and Chair of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. Deggans will discuss his book, “Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation.”

The conference is a collaboration of the IU Northwest Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs and the School of Education, as well as the IU Office of the Bicentennial, and the Legacy Foundation.
